Today I am power stretching more carpet wrinkles in another newer home in the Whitney Ranch area of Rocklin CA. This is a JMC home built in 2018 so the carpet is only a few years old and I was surprised to see carpet wrinkles in all the rooms in a single-story home.

Usually, all the newer homes I'm in have carpet upstairs and that's where the majority of the wrinkles are, so to see the carpet this badly wrinkled on the first floor can only mean this was a poor carpet installation.

The clients had me out for an estimate to explain the process and see what furniture needed to be moved so they would not have to move everything out of the rooms. They had everything prepared for me to just come in and get to work power stretching the rooms and repairing all the areas that had loose carpet.

There were 3 smaller bedrooms, a master bedroom, and a master bedroom closet that needed to have the carpet stretched in, and then they wanted the carpets professionally steam cleaned in the master bedroom and closet and one of the bedrooms.

All the work took about 3 hours and I was able to fix and repair all the areas that had carpet wrinkles to make sure the carpet stays flat and tight until the homeowners decide to replace the carpet.

At this job in Rocklin CA I was called out to stretch the carpet throughout the upstairs area of this home. There were 2 bedrooms, a master bedroom with a master closet, the hallway area, and a set of stairs. All of the bedrooms had furniture in them so a few pieces of furniture needed to be moved back and forth in order to do the job, but the entire room did not need to be completely empty.

Why Does Carpet Get Loose Upstairs?

Most of the jobs we get called out to re-stretch are upstairs. This is because heat rises in a home. When heat rises it goes through the plywood subloor directly to the back of the carpet, warming up the carpet. The carpet then expands when it gets warm, and if the carpet was not stretched properly when it was installed, it will stretch itself. With nowhere to move to, it will reach the walls and start to peak or wrinkle throughout the rooms.

This usually doesn't happen on concrete, unless there is a crack in the concrete slab which will result in moisture coming through. Any moisture or heat will cause the carpet to swell and expand, this is why some people notice their carpet develops wrinkles or bubbles after getting their carpets professionally steam cleaned.

Fixing Frayed Carpet Where It Meets Flooring

These repairs are the result of carpet installers missing 1 step. When carpet is installed to tile, hardwood, or other flooring, the carpet and will be left with a raw unclean carpet edge. This edge has to be sealed with seam sealer (or latex) to prevent the carpet from unraveling or becoming frayed over time.

Most of the time we can re-stretch these areas if they are minor or if you just notied the carpet fraying. On areas where the damage is too wide, or areas that meet the tile at an angle like you see above, the carpet will need to be patched to complete this repair.
